We must pray as he taught us to pray. He said: when you pray, go quietly into your room, withdraw from the world, and turn to God by calling him ‘Father!’. Jesus does not want his disciples to be like the hypocrites who pray while standing in the squares to be admired by the people (cf. Mt 6:5). Jesus does not want hypocrisy. True prayer is that done in the secret of the conscience, of the heart: inscrutable, visible only to God. God and I. It shuns falsehood: with God it is impossible to pretend. It is impossible; there are no tricks that have any power before God. God knows us like this, naked in one’s conscience, and there can be no pretense. At the root of the dialogue with God, there is a silent dialogue. Like the glance between two people in love: man’s gaze meets God’s, and this is prayer. Looking at God and allowing yourself to be looked upon by God: this is prayer. “But, Father, I do not say any words...”. Look at God and let yourself be looked upon by him: it is a prayer, a beautiful prayer! Source: Pope Francis’ catecheses on the Lord’s Prayer, given during general audiences between Dec. 5, 2018 and May 22, 2019. Message from Father Michael W. Davis Message from Most Reverend Thomas G. Wenski -- St. Gregory Church Seduced by the Lord! -- Our human journey of life involves many choices, options, styles of living and ways of relating with others. In all its variations, life can at times get complex and stressed. Decision-making can lack clarity. Even ways of resolving misunderstandings and conflicts can become arduous, if left to ourselves alone. Today, our Scripture readings invite us to courageously accept our responsibility in addressing matters that need attention, in confronting the tragedies of human selfishness and to again embrace “the way of Christ.” In Gospel passage after Gospel passage, Jesus himself teaches us how to live. He also teaches us how to communicate and interact with one another, even at the deepest level, all with a view to the peaceable Kingdom of God. Let’s start with our first reading. The prophet Ezekiel lays out the issue. Essentially, he asks us to ponder, “what are we supposed to do when there is wrong-doing that is taking place around us?” In other words, when we see evil, what are we supposed to do? How do we deal with the problems that confound us, especially if they are perpetrated by others? Well, the prophet places the responsibility squarely on our shoulders. “If you do not speak out to dissuade the wicked,” God will hold “us” accountable! But, if you warn the wicked, “and he refuses to turn from his ways, he shall die of his guilt and you shall save yourself.” Evidently, we see here, the imperative responsibility that we ourselves have, as people of biblical values, to address what needs to be addressed, even if it is difficult. We are also shown that in “stepping up” and doing what is right in the name of truth, we actually find our own virtue and reward by God’s grace. In today’s Gospel, we are provided a specific Christian methodology for resolving conflict, when life’s many moments of interpersonal communication get messy. Confrontation and problem-solving dynamics don’t have to be heated and nasty. There is a specific biblical style, yes a Christian style, for interacting with one another and resolving conflict. Christian neighborliness and courteousness are always better in tone than the alternative. Notice the sequence our Lord provides. Firstly, there should be direct discussion exclusively between the parties involved. Secondly, if needed, we should ask a witness or two to accompany ...
